About this formula

Most elderberry products are made the same way: boil the berries, add honey and spices, bottle it up. And most of them miss the point entirely.

The compounds that make elderberry worth taking -- polyphenols, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, and vitamin C -- begin degrading at temperatures as low as 77°F. Vitamin C takes an immediate 15-20% hit at just 86°F. By the time elderberries have been boiled to make a syrup, the vast majority of what made them medicinal has been destroyed.

The boiled syrup still "works" -- but not because of the elderberries. It works because of the cinnamon, cloves, thyme, and other supporting ingredients, which are more heat-stable and contribute their own benefits. The elderberries are largely along for the ride.

This is not boiled.

Every single clinical study ever conducted on elderberry has been done on elderberry extract -- raw, cold-processed, never boiled. Not on syrup. If you've been reading elderberry research and assuming it applies to a heated syrup, it doesn't. This is the product those studies were actually testing.

What's In An Elderberry?

Vitamin C and Antioxidant Flavanols:

  • Quercetin: free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory properties
  • Kaempferol: free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, studied for liver and metabolic health
  • Isorhamnetin: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Anthocyanins -- strong antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties. Elderberry is among the most significant dietary sources of redox-active anthocyanins. Elderberry anthocyanins can function as mitochondrial electron carriers. Research indicates they may help protect cells from oxidative stress, with neuroprotective effects linked to cell redox state and mitochondrial function.

Phenolic Acids:

  • Protocatechuic acid: animal trials demonstrate properties relevant to cardiovascular and neurological health
  • Chlorogenic acid: studied in metabolic health contexts; anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity properties documented
  • Rutin: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

None of these survive boiling. All are preserved in this preparation.

A Note on Elderberry Types

Red elders: traditionally used to support elimination. Raw seeds can be harmful -- not recommended unless you know what you're doing.
Blue elders: consume in moderation.
Black elders: the one to go for -- still consume sensibly if having raw.
